Kitesurfing at El Yaque Beach

Kitesurfing El Yaque Beach

The complete guide to riding the Caribbean's most legendary kite spot. Schools, conditions, gear, and insider tips from the local community.

Why El Yaque Is a World-Class Kite Destination

El Yaque Beach on the southern tip of Margarita Island has been a pilgrimage site for kiters and windsurfers since the early 1990s. Located in the path of the northeast trade winds that funnel through the gap between Margarita Island and the Venezuelan mainland, El Yaque delivers some of the most consistent and reliable wind anywhere in the Caribbean.

What makes El Yaque special is not just the wind — it is the combination of factors that come together to create a nearly perfect kite spot. The beach faces south-southwest, which means the prevailing northeast trades blow cross-shore from the left — the ideal angle for kitesurfing. A natural sandbar extends several hundred meters offshore, creating a large area of flat, waist-deep water that is perfect for beginners and freestyle riders alike. Beyond the sandbar, you will find choppier water and small waves for riders who want more challenge.

The wind season runs from November through May, with the strongest and most consistent conditions in January through April. During peak season, you can expect rideable wind (15+ knots) on 85-90% of days. The typical afternoon session sees 18-25 knots of clean, cross-shore wind with gusts up to 30 knots on the stronger days. Even the off-season months of June through October deliver two to three rideable days per week, making El Yaque a viable year-round destination for dedicated riders.

Water temperature stays warm year-round (26-28 degrees Celsius / 79-82 degrees Fahrenheit), so you will rarely need more than board shorts and a rashguard. Air temperature ranges from 27 to 33 degrees Celsius (80 to 91 degrees Fahrenheit), with the trade winds keeping things comfortable even on the hottest days.

Best Months for Kitesurfing

  • January - April: Peak season. 20-28 knots daily, often overpowered conditions on 9-10m kites. The most consistent period with wind almost every day.
  • November - December: Season builds. 15-22 knots most days. Good for beginners who want strong but not overpowered conditions.
  • May: Transition month. Still good wind 60-70% of days. Fewer crowds, lower accommodation prices.
  • June - October: Off-season. Wind 2-3 days per week, often lighter (12-18 knots). The best time for budget kite trips with the trade-off of less reliable wind.

Tips for Riding El Yaque

Kite Sizes

Bring a 9m and 12m for peak season. A 7m is useful for the strongest days in February-March. Off-season riders should add a 14m for lighter wind days.

Launch Zone Etiquette

The main launch area is on the west side of the beach. Launch and land toward the water, not toward the restaurants. Give right of way to riders on starboard tack (kite on the right side).

Best Time of Day

Wind typically builds through the morning and peaks from 12 PM to 4 PM. The thermal effect adds 3-5 knots to the trade wind base. Sunset sessions (4-6 PM) can be magical with golden light and mellower wind.

Safety

Use a safety leash and know your quick-release. The sandbar makes rescue easy in the flat water zone, but be cautious beyond it. Boat traffic is minimal but stay aware. Carry a whistle on your harness.
