Getting to El Yaque Beach
Everything you need to know about reaching the kite capital of the Caribbean. Flights, airport transfers, and travel logistics.
By Air: Santiago Marino Airport (PMV)
The most common way to reach El Yaque is by flying into Santiago Marino Caribbean International Airport (IATA: PMV), located on Margarita Island. The airport is just 10 minutes by car from El Yaque Beach — one of the shortest airport-to-beach transfers of any kite destination in the world.
Domestic Flights from Caracas
The most common route is Caracas (CCS - Simon Bolivar International Airport) to Margarita Island (PMV). Multiple airlines operate this route daily:
- Conviasa: The national carrier operates 2-3 daily flights. Fares range from $80-150 round trip.
- Laser Airlines: 1-2 daily flights with competitive pricing, typically $70-130 round trip.
- Turpial Airlines: Newer carrier with growing Margarita service.
Flight time from Caracas to Margarita is approximately 45 minutes. Book in advance during the peak kite season (December-March) as flights fill up, particularly on Friday and Sunday for weekend visitors.
International Flights
International visitors typically connect through Caracas. Key international routes into Caracas include:
- From Europe: Direct flights from Madrid (Iberia, Air Europa), Lisbon (TAP), and Rome (seasonal). Flight time: 9-11 hours.
- From Latin America: Direct flights from Panama City (Copa), Bogota (Avianca), Lima, Mexico City, and Santo Domingo. Flight times: 2-6 hours.
- From the Caribbean: Connections through Curacao, Aruba, or Trinidad are available, sometimes with direct service to PMV.
- From North America: No current direct flights from the US or Canada. Connect through Panama City (Copa Airlines), Bogota, or Mexico City. Some seasonal charter flights operate from Miami.
Seasonal Charter Flights
During peak kite season, some European tour operators run charter flights directly to PMV airport from cities in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. These packages often include accommodation in El Yaque and kite school access. Check with European kite travel agencies for current schedules.
Airport to El Yaque: Transfers
Taxi
Taxis are available outside the PMV arrivals terminal. The ride to El Yaque takes about 10 minutes and costs:
- Standard taxi: $5-10 USD
- With kite bags/oversize luggage: $10-15 USD (larger vehicle needed)
- Pre-arranged transfer through your accommodation: $8-12 USD (recommended for first-time visitors)
Tip: Agree on the fare before getting in the taxi. USD cash is widely accepted and preferred. Having small bills ($1, $5, $10) is helpful.
Accommodation Pickup
Most posadas and vacation rentals in El Yaque offer airport pickup for guests. This is often the most convenient option, especially if you are arriving with kite equipment. Ask your host to arrange this when you book — they will usually send a driver with a vehicle large enough for your gear.
Car Rental
Several car rental agencies operate at PMV airport. Rates start at $25-40/day for a basic sedan. A car is useful if you plan to explore beyond El Yaque — visit other beaches, go to Porlamar for shopping, or take day trips around the island. However, most visitors find that once they are in El Yaque, everything they need is within walking distance.
By Ferry from the Mainland
Ferries connect the Venezuelan mainland (Puerto La Cruz and Cumana) with Margarita Island (Punta de Piedras port). The crossing takes 3-5 hours depending on the ferry type:
- Conferry and Navibus: Standard car and passenger ferries. Fares: $10-20 per person, $30-50 per vehicle.
- Express ferries: Faster passenger-only service in about 2 hours. Fares: $20-30 per person.
From Punta de Piedras port, El Yaque is approximately 25 minutes by taxi ($10-15). The ferry option is mainly used by visitors coming from mainland Venezuela with their own vehicles.
Getting Around El Yaque
Once you are in El Yaque, you probably will not need transportation for daily activities. The village is compact and walkable — the beach, restaurants, kite schools, and shops are all within a 5-10 minute walk. For trips beyond El Yaque:
- Local taxis: Available throughout the day. Rides within the El Yaque area cost $2-3. To Porlamar: $8-12.
- Motorbike rental: $15-25/day. Popular for exploring the island independently.
- Bicycle: Some rentals offer bikes for free; otherwise $5-10/day.
